They really liked to see the videos. Specially the German one because it was a german class and we had the theme body this time. Sometimes the sound was not really good,it was hard to understand, also our own Swedish video. So we saw it a several times and the students was happy.
We have connected physical education and language in small sided games. We make it as warmup - games. At the moment i have tried the exercises described below, with some of my classes. Letter-orientering. The students have made an orienteringcourse on the schoolyard. One letter, at each controll. When they have completed the course, they have 5 minutes to create so many words as possible with the letters they have found. They create words in their foreign language, spanish, german or french. Letter- shuttlerun (create words) The class is divided in to different groups depend on wich modern foreign language they read. One german Group, one french group and so on. Every group compete in à shuttlerun. The first person in the team run to the end of the hall, choose one letter and run back to the team. Next person start running and take another letter. Every team collect letters for 2 minutes. Then every team start to create so many words they can with their letters. The german group create german words and so on. Strength - exercises Together with the mfl teachers at our school, I have made instructions in different language to describe different type of strength exercises. Together with a picture on the exercise, the instructions are written in german, french and spanish on the frontpage. At the backpage you can read the description of the exercise in english or swedish. (You can see the descriptions of the exercieses on the file in the end of this post) Others Sometimes I also try to connect language and physical education in games like "hide and seek". Instead of always counting in swedish, we sometimes try to count in for example german (einz, zwei, drei......) Greetings from Markus and Scheeleskolan
This voice recording was made by three students in Year 8 at Scheeleskolan, Köping and is an interesting sample product of innovative teaching in MFL .
During autumn 2016, our MFL students were instructed to form small groups and write sketches in French, German and Spanish. The setting should be in school or at a restaurant, or even on a journey. As MFL teachers we helped the students with language points such as grammar, pronunciation and spelling, but the students decided how the sketches should develop. The end product was going to be a short film. However, some students made voice recordings instead. Below you can watch an extract of a film in French, recorded with an iPad. Three girls used it to make this film starring themselves. One is acting as teacher, another as student and the third as student plus headteacher. "Emma" first gets an A in Arts, handing in a beautiful painting, which later turns out to be a copy of a work of Claude Monet. She is sent to the headteacher's office to be corrected...
In late April, MFL students at Scheeleskolan were introduced to a new part of the MFL in Maths project, in which they were asked to create their own mini-lessons about Maths in a foreign language. Mr. Samuelsson prepared an example in French, using the app ExplainEverything, that he later shared with his MFL colleagues, so that they could do an adaptation of it in the language they teach (i.e. German or Spanish). This is shown as a screenshot below and was used as a way of sparking the students interest and creativity. After two or three lessons, each student/pair/group of students had made a Kahoot quiz or prepared a Maths problem in another form in order to put their peers to the test. The pictures below show some of these activities in French class on the 20th and 25th of May.
We recently asked MFL students in year 7 which ideas they had seen in practice most regularly in our lessons since the start of the current school year. They had to pick 3 ideas each from the list below (see further info under Joint project work) and write the corresponding numbers on a small piece of paper. To help the students, we translated the 7 ideas into Swedish before showing these in a Keynote presentation. However, here they are in English:
The result of the survey that we have made in four classes of MFL students – of either French, German or Spanish – is as follows: 1. Activities such as quizzes and games used regularly to practise vocabulary (50)* 2. Use of ICT and other new technology in lessons (33)* 3. a) Variety of different activities/skills practised in each lesson (32)* b) Working in groups, for example to do role plays (32)* * The number between brackets represents the number of students that had observed a certain idea in practice, according to the count made after we had collected the pieces of paper with three numbers (from the list of ideas) per student. The Kahoot movie was recorded on a maths lesson in two parts, on the 11th of May. The assignment given to the students of 6:Epsilon was to create maths quizzes in Kahoot. It is a webb app in which you can create questions, upload the quiz and play in real time. The students already had experience of using Kahoot, as we use to finish the maths lesson every Wednesday with a quiz, but in Swedish. This time, the students were told to work out questions and answers in English about geometry. While the students tried to formulate multiple choice questions I filmed their work. When some groups had finished creating Kahoots, we played the quizzes. Finally the students were asked to make an evaluation of the lesson.
If you have a Kahoot account and would like to try one of the kahoots created during this lesson, just log in, click on Public kahoots and search for Matte02 by Mayadome. |
