Transnational Teaching and Learning Activity "Devise an Evaluation Tool"
January 16, 2016 - January 23, 2016
Schleusingen, Germany
Two students and one teacher from each partner school took part in a meeting in Schleusingen. Angelika Stern, a student of the Technical University of Ilmenau taught the participants about how to create an evaluative questionnaire. The workshop was held in English and the students got an overview of empirical research. They learned about the steps of empirical research projects. The students learned especially about scale levels and developing scales on their own. All participants explored quantitative inquires in more detail. The students developed a quantitative questionnaire (this included formulating questions and answering options) and implemented their draft into www.esurv.org. They contributed to the final questionnaire by elaborating categories, questions, and answering options for the final questionnaire. During the meeting they received an initial introduction into data analyses (frequencies, means, minima, maxima) and they learned how to visualize the socio-demographical data. Another subject was how to explain the results using frequencies, means, minima and maxima. All students were very active and at the end of a busy week they got a certificate for their excellent work. A copy of the questionnaires they devised is posted below this report.
Meanwhile the teachers took part in some professional development - they observed a variety of lessons and were able to get an impression of learning in a German school. Both teachers from England took part in a bilingual project English/French and were able to share some lessons in French. The students seemed to appreciate the chance to speak to some other people and were very proud after the lessons.
In the afternoon there was time to relax and to get into closer contact with the boys and girls of the host families. I want to say thank you again to the hosts who gave the participants a second home for the week.
There were several activities throughout the whole week.
On Sunday the teachers visited the Museum of Natural History in the Castle Bertholdsburg. This castle was founded between 1226 to 1232 and was residence of the Hennebergian County for three centuries then. It was named after Berthold VII, the most important Hennebergian Count in the Middle Ages. The residence time stopped by the death of the last Hennebergian Count Georg Ernst. Our school has the title Hennebergisches Gymnasium "Georg Ernst". In the evening students and teachers had a torch walk and after enjoying the snow in Frauenwald we had a meal together with Dr. Amthor, our headmaster, Andreas Butz, our deputy head and some other colleagues.
On Monday students and teachers took part in a dancing lesson.
On Tuesday we went by bus to Suhl and were guest at the observatory. It was very interesting to get more information about the moon, the stars and the sun. The exhibition was also remarkable. Afterwards we went bowling in the Congress Centre in Suhl.
On Wednesday we visited the Aquarium in Zella-Mehlis. It was beautiful to see the various kinds of fishes, reptiles and especially the sharks. It is a unique world of colours.
On Thursday it was time to find out how "ThüringerBratwürste" are prepared. It was an interesting and funny evening.
Friday was the last day of our project. We went by bus to Ilmenau Ice Rink where students and teachers could show their talent in ice skating. Finally we were sightseeing in Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia.
On Saturday, sadly, it was time for the guests to depart.
We hope that the meeting in Schleusingen was a chance to get into closer contact with other people from different cultures and to learn more about how to create an evaluation questionnaire.
