On 27th February we were finally able to set up a video-conference between Finland and Germany. The language used was English. The students were aged 13-14 and they discussed in groups of 4-5 students each school. In Germany all the students could hear and see the Finns, in Finland the group of students were in a separate room. First the students introduced themselves and told a few facts eg their hobbies. Then they could ask each other questions. We had echnical problems all through the 40 minutes. Perhaps due to the slow internet connection the picture pixellated and the voice cracked so that sometimes it was impossible to make out what the Germans were saying. However, the students liked it very much and would love to do it again.
On Tuesday 14th February some students aged 13-14 from Ounsdale and Schelusingen did a class SKYPE together using French. We had a few technical problems getting this set up but in the end all went well
Students started by introducing themselves - they had the say their name and 2 other facts. This allowed us to get to know each other a little better After that we asked more open ended questions At the end, students from both schools said they had enjoyed the experience and we hope to be able to do something similar again soon A Finnish-Swedish connectionScheeleskolan and Liedon Keskuskoulu have set up two Skype sessions for young English learners in 2017. The first session took place on January 20 and the second on February 17. The topic to discuss was how the students would spend the sports holidays. The pictures show the Finnish class seen on the computer of the teacher in Sweden. You may also notice that there is a small inset picture of the Swedish students in the bottom right corner of the computer screen.
In spite of some problems we had hearing each other, a couple of students on both sides could eventually talk to each other about the weather this winter and their plans for the sports holidays. The students in both schools obviously had fun during the Skype sessions and as teachers we see a potential for a linguistically and culturally enriching cooperation on an international level for our students and ourselves. |
